The attacks, which included more than a dozen explosions in Kyiv, caused fires to break out and power outages in some areas. Mayor Klitschko also reported that debris had been found at a Western embassy in the city centre.
Tymur Tkachenko, Kyiv regional governor, said that a Russian missile and a drone strike killed a child and injured three more people in the area, damaging infrastructure facilities, houses, warehouses, and cars. Tkachenko added that a residential building in Vyshhorod, Kyiv Oblast, was destroyed, killing a child.
In Sumy, Russian glide bombs struck homes and a school, killing two people and injuring six. A 74-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman were among the fatalities in Sumy.
Emergency services flooded the area, and armed officers cordoned off surrounding streets shortly after the attack. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko put the injury count at nine, marking the tenth consecutive day of Russian drone attacks on Kyiv.
Russia acknowledged the massive overnight assault, saying it had hit a data centre in the capital supporting Ukraine's armed forces, various power plants in the Kyiv region, an industrial complex in Odesa region, and port infrastructure in Izmail.
The Russian Embassy in Ireland cited what it called 'information' that NATO is preparing an air and naval blockade of Kaliningrad Oblast. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart told the Kyiv Independent that Russia told NATO it would be ready to use nuclear weapons if alliance members attempt to isolate Kaliningrad Oblast.
Ukraine's neighbours, European Union and NATO members Romania and Poland, scrambled military jets to protect their airspaces amid Russian attacks on Ukraine, according to defence ministry and armed forces statements on X.
Ukrainian forces also struck three ground control stations for Russian drones, alongside other targets, the General Staff said. Eighty-one companies are now authorized to form private air defense units, up from 51 in mid-July, as the country, and particularly Kyiv and the surrounding area, come under near-constant Russian attack.
