Former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk returned to the team's offices on Friday to begin the process of NFL reinstatement after a two-year absence.

Aiyuk, who last played in October 2024, tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus in his right knee during a game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Aiyuk's return to the 49ers offices was a significant event, drawing more than 20 reporters when he and his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, arrived around 2:50 p.m.

Rosenhaus and Aiyuk addressed reporters but declined to comment on Aiyuk's future team, stating, 'Don't really have any comment about where he's going to play. We'll keep that between us and the Niners, but, obviously, we're here with all the right intentions.'

The 49ers voided about $27 million in salary guarantees from Aiyuk's contract after he missed mandatory rehab sessions and other requirements.

Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the 49ers in August 2024, but the team is now seeking about $13 million in bonus forfeiture from him.

General Manager John Lynch told CBS Sports, 'I'm doing everything in my power to keep our roster together,' but also suggested that 'everything is possible' regarding a reunion with Aiyuk.

Despite Lynch's comments, the team has not shown enthusiasm for Aiyuk's return, with Coach Kyle Shanahan and other leaders remaining unmoved and unenthused.

Aiyuk's agent, Rosenhaus, said, 'Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field,' but the meeting with the 49ers did not provide immediate clarity on his future with the team.

What this adds

Aiyuk's return to the 49ers offices was a significant event, drawing more than 20 reporters when he and his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, arrived around 2:50 p.m.

The $13 million the 49ers are seeking is part of the $23 million signing bonus Aiyuk received when he signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension in 2024.

Before Aiyuk ghosted the team, he skipped rehab appointments, which allowed the 49ers to void about $27 million in guarantees from his deal.
