In Short: These expanding restrictions also aim to keep apps away from both AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions and virtual 'girlfriend/boyfriend' simulators that could pose mental health risks.

The Verge reports that Apple will soon start asking developers to provide more details about their apps to enforce new App Store age rating requirements for dating and location-sharing features.

Apps that include dating and relationships features will receive a minimum age rating of 18, while those with location sharing will see an impact to their minimum age rating in some regions, depending on local regulations.

These expanding restrictions also aim to keep apps away from both AI chatbots that support sexual or romantic interactions and virtual 'girlfriend/boyfriend' simulators that could pose mental health risks.

New content descriptors announced on Monday will require developers to declare if their apps allow users to share their real-world location with others or include features that enable dating, relationship, or sexual behavior between real people or virtual companions.

Apple already has an 18-plus rating category for the App Store, but this has largely applied to apps that feature gambling, violence, references to drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, and nudity or sexual content.

Most dating platforms are also adult-only, but Apple extending its ratings is an effort to prevent minors from slipping through the cracks.

9To5Mac reports that Apple plans to open up CarPlay to voice-enabled chatbot apps, a move separate from Apple’s efforts to enhance Siri capabilities with Apple Intelligence.

Apple’s new-and-improved Siri AI, introduced with iOS 27, is more knowledgeable and capable, unlike other chatbots, as it can tap into personal data in apps like Mail, Messages, and Photos.

Apple directed the developer of Bitchat, an offline messaging app developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, to remove the app from the India App Store following a government order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Apple cited content that it said was illegal in India and therefore not compliant with its App Review Guidelines, but the company did not specify what particular content in Bitchat was considered illegal or which specific ground under Section 69A was cited.

Apple’s new age rating requirements for dating and location-sharing features will take effect in the coming months, as developers are required to provide more detailed information about their apps to comply with the new guidelines.
