President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that Audi, a German luxury carmaker, will build a $4.2 billion factory in Georgia, creating approximately 4,500 jobs. The plant, located in Macon, is expected to begin construction in 2027 and start production in the early 2030s.

The announcement was made during a campaign rally in Perry, Georgia, where Trump sought to boost Republican candidates. He credited his aggressive tariff policies for the company's decision to build the plant.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said the plant would produce the company's largest and most premium SUVs. 'This is a long-term investment, because we believe in the American market,' Döllner told supporters.

The facility will be built about 5 miles west of I-75 on the north side of Ga. 49, near Fort Valley. 'Building a new plant from the ground up allows us to rethink manufacturing from day one,' said production chief Gerd Walker.

Trump emphasized the significance of the investment, calling it 'the single largest investment in U.S. auto industry history, modern history.' He added, 'Without tariffs, they wouldn't be coming in.'

The plant is expected to produce 200,000 cars annually, a figure Trump described as 'incredible.' State officials say it could employ at least 4,500 people when fully built out.

In July, Toyota announced it would spend $3.6 billion to build a 2.5 million-square-foot truck assembly line in San Antonio, Texas, and shift some truck production to the U.S. from Mexico.

Last year, Trump's tariffs cost Audi €1.2-billion-euro ($1.4-billion), according to DW (Germany) and Euronext Markets. The tariffs, Trump claimed, were a key factor in Audi's decision to invest in the U.S.

Audi also plans to build 25,000 vehicles a year in neighboring South Carolina, an official said. Volkswagen plans to enlarge its Scout Motors factory in Blythewood, South Carolina, boosting capacity by 25,000 units annually for a model that has not been decided.

What this adds

The facility will be built at the Middle Georgia Mega Site, according to a press release from Audi.

The plant will provide a real-time view into how each of its nine major appliance plants is running, down to the workstation, thanks to the company's data platform Brilliant Factory.
