In Short: The euro edged higher above 1.1200 despite concerns over French debt and political instability.

The euro edged higher above 1.1200 on Monday, despite ongoing concerns over French debt and political instability. The country's public debt now stands at roughly €3.5 trillion, or approximately 119% of GDP, and it has not recorded a budget surplus since 1974.

The turmoil in France, driven by political instability, a yawning budget deficit, and nationwide riots, has sent shockwaves through Italy, Belgium, and Greece, weakening the euro to a 17-month low against the dollar.

The budget deficit reached 5.5% of GDP in 2025 and is forecast to remain stubbornly high at 5.4% in 2026, well above the European Union’s 3% ceiling.

French bonds have been targeted by what one strategist called 'bond vigilantes'—investors who punish countries perceived as fiscally undisciplined. The yield on France’s benchmark 10-year bond surged to near 5% this month, its highest level since 2002.

The sell-off in French government bonds has spilled over into broader European markets, pushing borrowing costs to multi-year highs and reigniting fears of a new eurozone debt crisis.

Investors are becoming more selective about European government debt, favouring Germany over countries they consider riskier. The yield spread between French 10-year bonds and German government bonds, known as Bunds, reached around 157 basis points.

The French debt sell-off triggered a reassessment of global rate expectations, but US short-dated yields only corrected modestly.

French President Emmanuel Macron voiced the public’s “anger” and “shame” over the rioting and looting, while political leader Florian Philippot called on Macron to resign amid the unrest.

The French Ministry of Agriculture announced the first documented case of a human infected with the Shamonda virus, a pathogen previously only found in cattle herds.

Oil prices rose above $110 as attacks on Saudi infrastructure and shipping near the Strait of Hormuz revived global supply and inflation fears.

French AI startup Mistral announced its biggest open-weight model, dubbed 'Chonk', claiming enhanced performance and security capabilities for clients seeking to keep their data private.

Thieves broke into a museum of work by French impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, stealing four works of art worth an estimated £7.7m (€9 million).

Background

The 10-year Treasury note closed at a high yield of 4.8%, a level not seen in nearly three years and more than 60 basis points above estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), while the 2-year Treasury yield is at a near 2-year high of 4.4%, according to Crfb.

France's benchmark 10-year bond yield surged to near 5%, its highest level since 2002, amid growing concerns over the country's fiscal stability and political gridlock.
