Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least nine people and injuring 33 others, according to reports from Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Kyivpost (Ukraine).
Al Jazeera reported that the attack caused power outages and fires across Kyiv, while Kyivpost noted that the facility hit was previously damaged in a June missile strike.
The Ukrainian government said the attack was aimed at reducing Russia's ability to manufacture precision-guided weapons used against Ukrainian targets. Kyivpost reported that the facility hit was part of Russia’s defense-industrial base and produced components for missile guidance systems, onboard computers, and air defense equipment.
According to Al Jazeera, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Ukraine has run out of interceptor missiles for its US Patriot air defense systems. Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine had struck three Russian oil refineries in the Bashkortostan region and sunk a sanctioned Russian container ship.
Kyivpost reported that the attack caused significant damage to an education facility and injured at least 20 people in Ukraine's capital. The Ukrainian air force said it destroyed or suppressed 131 Russian aerial targets during the overnight attack in the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions.
In Darnytskyi, seven people were killed and 14 injured as the attack caused fires and damaged homes, vehicles, and an administrative building, according to Al Jazeera.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it struck two key Russian military airbases in occupied Crimea with drones, damaging or destroying at least seven combat aircraft in its second attack on the Saky airbase this week.
The attack on Kyiv is the second major attack on the city this week, according to Al Jazeera.
U.S. President Donald Trump called on Ukraine to replace Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Saturday, after criticizing Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure and announcing a diesel supply deal with Russia, according to the Koreatimes (Korea, Republic of).
The Ukrainian government and President Zelenskyy have emphasized that their targets are facilities that sustain the war effort, and that they are intensifying attacks on Russian territory, mainly targeting oil depots.
The attack also underscores the challenges Ukraine faces in defending against Russian strikes, with President Zelenskyy warning that Ukraine has run out of interceptor missiles for its US Patriot air defense systems.
