Netflix announced Wednesday at its 2026 Upfronts presentation in New York City that it has renewed 'Running Point' for a third season.

The show, which stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves basketball team, has become one of Netflix's signature comedies since its debut in early 2025.

Season 2 opened with softer viewership compared to its predecessor but saw a 27% viewership jump in its second week, signaling the kind of word-of-mouth momentum Netflix looks for before greenlighting another season.

The series has surpassed 60 million views across its first two seasons, with Season 1 reaching No. 1 in the Global English Top 10 TV list for five weeks.

The ensemble cast includes Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Brenda Song, Fabrizio Guido, Chet Hanks, Toby Sandeman, and Uche Agada as series regulars, with a deep recurring bench that features Max Greenfield, Jay Ellis, Rob Huebel, Ken Marino, Richa Moorjani, and Blake Anderson.

Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and showrunner David Stassen return as writers and executive producers for the upcoming season.

In a significant change, Kaling will also step in front of the camera for the show’s third season, marking her first on-screen acting work since 2023.

The Season 2 finale ended with a bombshell: ousted Cam has teamed up with rival investor Al “The Flush Man” Fleischman to resurrect a competing LA franchise, hiring Isla’s love interest Jay (Jay Ellis) as head coach, setting the stage for an all-out crosstown rivalry.

Netflix also dropped a collage of stills from the upcoming season, featuring Hudson and the returning cast.

The series, inspired by the LA Lakers and team president Jeanie Buss, has garnered significant international appeal, ranking in the Top 10 in 89 countries and being one of Netflix’s top 15 shows in the first half of 2025.

The renewal comes on the heels of a strong cumulative performance, with the show’s first season premiering on February 27, 2025, and quickly becoming a breakout hit.

The upcoming season will see Justin Theroux and Uche Agada elevated to series regulars, while eight new faces will join the ensemble in recurring guest roles.

What this adds

Netflix's decision to renew 'Running Point' for a third season and Mindy Kaling's involvement as a recurring cast member adds to the show's momentum and popularity.

The show's strong performance and international appeal have solidified its position as one of Netflix's top comedies.

Kaling's on-screen return marks her first acting role since 2023, adding a new layer of excitement for fans of the series.
