Chelsea's Martinez Hospitalized After Head Injury
Confirmed
In Short: Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso said Martinez was taken to the hospital for precautionary tests, and the extent of the injury remains unclear.

Chelsea's goalkeeper Emi Martinez was taken off on a stretcher during the second half of the Premier League match against Everton on Saturday after a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
Martinez was strapped to a stretcher and taken to the hospital for precautionary tests following the head injury, which occurred in a clash of heads.
The incident paused the game for several minutes, leading to 11 minutes of stoppage time at the end of the match.
Martinez's injury gave 21-year-old keeper Mike Penders the opportunity to make his Premier League debut.
Penders helped Chelsea secure their first clean sheet in the league since January, ending a 22-game run without one.
Pedro Neto scored a brace for Chelsea, contributing to their 2-0 victory over Everton.
The first goal came just 43 seconds after the restart when Jorrel Hato cut the ball back to an unmarked Neto, who scored into the bottom corner.
Neto's second goal came in the 90th minute after Jordan Henderson's free kick was blocked, allowing Neto to find the bottom corner with a composed finish.
Chelsea's victory put an end to Everton's unbeaten start to the season and marked their first clean sheet this season.
Martinez was conscious when leaving the stadium, but he received extended treatment from the Chelsea physios and paramedics before being stretchered off the field while receiving oxygen.
Everton manager David Moyes expressed hope that Martinez would be fine, adding that he had not seen the full extent of the injury from the dugout.
What this adds
The incident at Chelsea's match is unrelated to the hospitalization of Diddy, the music mogul, who was briefly hospitalized after a non-life-threatening head injury while serving a sentence for prostitution-related offenses.
Background
Diddy, the disgraced music mogul, was briefly hospitalized after suffering a non-life-threatening head injury while serving a 50-month sentence for prostitution-related offenses.
What's confirmed
- “We are really pleased. Shame for Emi but we wish you all the best. This win is for him,” Portuguese winger Neto told TNT Sports after his first Premier League brace.
What's still developing
- “This comes a little bit from the new coach of the national team (Jorge Jesus) that says when you are near to the area you need to pass to the goal, so really happy with that,” Neto said of his finish.
- Chelsea have had a knack for scoring goals early in games this season but were kept at bay by Everton in a feisty and physical first half that produced five yellow cards and several heated exchanges.
- Everton manager David Moyes said: "I just said to TV, I've not seen the Martínez injury yet so I hope he's fine. I really do. I couldn't even see from the dugout. It just looked as if it was a sharing ball in between a couple of people. I don't know what else happened."
- "It was a concussion but more than that. I saw just one clip but we'll have to wait."
- "In the first half, there were moments where there were corners and throw ins and you need to overcome these moments. It's very hard in the Premier League to have full control of the game but you need to make sure you don't lose your shape or your condition and today we did that really well."
- “We need to repeat it again and again and again to know for sure but the mentality was very good. Sometimes it’s not about playing nice but playing good football, winning many second balls and being efficient. We need a game like this. The feeling at Brentford was that it was not enough. Today has been better but it’s just one. When it’s 10 clean sheets …” There were goalkeeping issues at both ends of the field with Jordan Pickford unconvincing for the second week in a row for Everton.
- “We just didn’t create enough which meant if we did anything wrong defensively it would count against us.” So it proved.
- “Hopefully it is not too bad but we need to wait.” A first Premier League clean sheet since January, and second successive win since losing at Brentford before the Nations League break, were otherwise secured with a minimum of fuss in a commanding second-half performance.
- The Chelsea keeper required lengthy treatment before being carried away with his neck in a brace and to the uncomfortable sound of Evertonian boos.
- “It’s one day,” the Chelsea manager replied when asked whether victory, built on a feisty first-half display and mature second, provided evidence of the mentality he craves at Stamford Bridge.
- “It wasn’t that we played that badly overall,” said Moyes.
- The Maltese-flagged, Ukrainian-owned general cargoship Chelsea 3 was struck by three aerial drones early Tuesday morning, approximately 18 nautical miles east of Byala.
