Grey's Anatomy Boss Teases Rural Texas Spinoff for 2026-2027
Confirmed
In Short: Meg Marinis, Grey's Anatomy's showrunner, discusses the upcoming Texas spinoff set in rural West Texas.

Meg Marinis, the showrunner of 'Grey's Anatomy,' has revealed details about the upcoming Texas spinoff during an interview with ComingSoon.net. The spinoff, set to premiere during the 2026-2027 season, will focus on a rural West Texas medical center.
Marinis expressed her interest in exploring 'medical deserts,' areas where access to healthcare is limited. She noted, 'There’s so much going on there that I haven’t seen on TV.'
The disparity in healthcare access between those who can afford excellent care and those who cannot is a central theme of the new series. Marinis highlighted, 'The disparity is growing even wider between people who can afford excellent healthcare and the people who can’t.'
The new show will be set at a rural West Texas medical center, which Marinis described as 'the last chance for care before miles of nowhere.' She emphasized that the stories will be different from those in 'Grey's Anatomy,' stating, 'It’s related to Grey’s, but its stories are going to be different.'
Marinis also addressed the longevity of 'Grey's Anatomy,' noting that no one has informed her about when the last season of the show will be. She said, 'No one has said anything to me about when the last season of Grey’s is going to be.'
The spinoff will be co-created and written by Marinis and Shonda Rhimes, with Grey's star and executive producer Ellen Pompeo also serving as an executive producer.
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Marinis discussed the challenges of balancing the Grey's Anatomy schedule with the new spinoff. She mentioned, 'We have thoughts based on airing schedule and things like that, but we’re still working it out, also because there are so many things going on on Grey’s, I want to make sure to do it where it’s servicing both shows equally.'
The new VIP wing at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, introduced in the season 23 premiere, has sparked controversy. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) butted heads with Catherine and Richard over the VIP floor's impact on patient care.
