The anime adaptation of the PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, originally set for 2027, has been delayed to 2028, according to announcements made during Crunchyroll’s New York Comic Con 2026 panel.
The game, developed by Sucker Punch Productions, was released in 2020 for PlayStation 4 and later for PlayStation 5 and PC. The multiplayer addition, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, debuted in October 2020 and became available separately from the original game in September 2021.
The anime, which will debut exclusively on Crunchyroll, is a fictionalization of the historical 1274 Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima. It follows samurai Jin Sakai, the sole survivor of his clan, as he fights a guerilla war against the invading Mongols.
The newly announced main cast members include Mayumi Saco and Shinya Fukumatsu, who will join the show in undisclosed roles. Saco notably voiced Tomoe in the original Ghost of Tsushima game, while Fukumatsu is known for roles including Bomb in One-Punch Man.
The anime is being directed by Takanobu Mizuno at studio Kamikaze Douga, with Gen Urobuchi writing the story composition and co-writing the script with Renji Oki. Additional staff members include composer Keiji Inai, sound director Yoshikazu Iwanami, sound editor Yasumasa Koyama, and title calligraphy artist Gyousyou Suzuki.
The delay could give the project more time to become refined and complete before it begins streaming on Crunchyroll in 2028. Aniplex and Crunchyroll’s HAYATE venture are collaborating with PlayStation Productions on the production.
The game has a sequel titled Ghost of Yōtei, which launched in October 2025, set more than 300 years later in 1603 in Hokkaido.
The updated premiere window was confirmed at Crunchyroll’s showcase during New York Comic Con 2026 on October 8, where attendees were also shown an exclusive work-in-progress preview of the series.
No official explanation was offered for the delay, but the creative roster makes the delay easy to understand, as it allows for more time to ensure the series maintains the game's authentic aesthetic.
The anime is a great evolution by the foundation that Sucker Punch built with Ghost of Tsushima, despite the story feeling like a retread of other revenge stories, the characters, new gameplay mechanics, and extra content make for a game that will hook you from beginning to end.
