On Tuesday evening, a Liberian-flagged tanker caught fire off the coast of Sochi, Russia, according to Arabnews (Saudi Arabia) and English (Ukraine) reports. Videos and photos circulating on social media showed bright orange flames and a thick column of black smoke billowing into the sky, visible from the resort city.

Arabnews reported that Russia’s transport ministry said the tanker was attacked by “naval drones” and that crude oil was burning openly in the waters of the Black Sea. In contrast, English (Ukraine) cited Ukrainian Defense Ministry claims that the tanker was part of Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” and had been struck by a Ukrainian drone.

Both Arabnews and English (Ukraine) agreed that the fire originated from the Liberia-flagged tanker AFRAMAX RIO, which had been identified by Ukraine as part of Russia’s shadow fleet. The tanker was reportedly transporting Russian oil from Russian ports.

According to MarineTraffic, the tanker had transmitted coordinates near the settlement of Sirius a day earlier, matching the site of the fire. The Agency.Novosti outlet determined that only one oil tanker was near Sochi at the time of the incident.

Sochi Mayor Andrei Proshunin temporarily restricted access to the city’s waterfronts and beaches, urging residents and tourists not to put themselves in danger due to the fire.

Dmitry Plishkin, head of the Sirius federal territory, said in a social media post that the tanker caught fire in the Black Sea and that Sirius beaches would be temporarily closed to ensure public safety. He added that water and air conditions were being continuously monitored in conjunction with Roshydromet.

Local residents reported hearing no explosions, but a Russian military channel claimed that enemy strikes were not without effect. Plishkin described the fire as extensive, engulfing almost the entire deck of the tanker.

The Kyiv Post (Ukraine) noted that Sochi has increasingly come under Ukrainian drone attacks over the past year, with strikes on its port and an oil depot reported in September alone.

The Aframax Rio was sanctioned by Ukraine on February 12, 2026, among 91 vessels designated as part of Russia’s shadow fleet. The tanker was reportedly servicing the oil pipeline that runs along Sochi.

NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System data showed a large, intense heat signature west of Sochi, confirming the extent of the fire.

Both sides have vowed to escalate strikes in recent weeks, with Ukraine claiming it has put 51% of Russia’s oil refining capacity out of action through recent strikes on refineries.

What this adds

The sources have not established the exact time or location of the drone strike. The extent of damage to the tanker and the environmental impact of the fire remain unclear.
