Concert Laser Reveals Hidden Eye Condition at EURETINA
Confirmed
In Short: A concert laser show revealed a hidden vascular condition in a young woman, according to case reports presented at the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA) 2026.

At the EURETINA 2026 conference, case reports highlighted unusual findings from a concert laser show, including a hidden vascular condition in a young woman.
Yaren Guven and Fatma Sümer, from Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University in Rize, Turkey, presented a case where exposure to laser light displays destabilized polypoidal lesions, causing submacular hemorrhage disproportionate to the expected photic injury.
Joana Da Silva Rocha and colleagues from Hospital Pedro Hispano in Matosinhos, Portugal, reported that ocular inflammation preceded a diagnosis of metastatic breast carcinoma, underscoring the potential role of ophthalmologic findings as an early indicator of systemic malignancy.
Devarsh Joshi and Suzannah Bell, from Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, suggested a possible link between eating disorders and retinal hemorrhage, noting that bulimia nervosa may cause retinal hemorrhages.
"Typical laser maculopathy causes focal photoreceptor disruption or superficial hemorrhage — massive submacular hemorrhage is exceedingly rare and should raise suspicion of an underlying vascular pathology," said one of the presenters.
"In this case, ocular inflammation, under the form of multifocal inflammatory choroiditis, preceded the radiologic diagnosis of metastatic breast carcinoma, emphasizing the potential role of ophthalmologic findings as a possible indicator of systemic malignancy, especially in patients with a history of cancer," another presenter noted.
To our knowledge, retinal hemorrhages specifically associated with self-induced vomiting in bulimia nervosa have not previously been reported, highlighting a potentially overlooked ocular consequence of purging behavior.
Greater awareness may facilitate multidisciplinary care between ophthalmology, primary care, and eating-disorder/mental-health services.
Meanwhile, Celine Dion returned to the stage after battling a rare neurological disorder, performing a sold-out concert in Paris on September 12, 2026.
"These are, of course, tears of joy. I'm so delighted to see you," Dion said, blowing kisses to the audience at the packed Plenitude Arena.
"The path was rockier than expected," she said, speaking in French and English.
"Tonight, I want to sing for you, sing for myself, sing for life," she added.
