Google Downgrades Gemini for Budget Plan Users
Developing
In Short: Google is downgrading access to its Gemini AI models for users on budget plans, according to Android Authority.

Google is downgrading access to its Gemini AI models for users on budget plans, according to Android Authority. Starting with the release of Gemini 4 Argon, non-paying users and those on the AI Plus tier will be limited to using Gemini 3.5-Flash-Lite.
Users without a Google AI subscription will no longer be able to access Gemini 3.6 Flash or newer versions of the models. This change comes as Google continues to roll out iterative updates to its lightweight Gemini models, including the recent Gemini 3.8 Flash update in September.
Google is also introducing new usage limits based on the effort level chosen by users. Options range from low, medium, and high effort, but higher effort levels will exhaust usage limits more quickly.
In addition to these changes, Google plans to restrict AI Plus tier users to Flash and Flash-Lite models, while removing access to Gemini 3.1-Pro and newer reasoning models.
Meanwhile, Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers will retain access to advanced features, including a Deep Thinking option.
Google is testing Gemini 4 Argon in closed quarters before releasing it to the wider user base, and it may also release the first advanced reasoning model since Gemini 3.1 Pro.
These changes reflect Google's strategy to differentiate its AI offerings based on subscription tiers, potentially impacting the user experience for those on budget plans.
What this adds
Google's decision to downgrade Gemini for budget plan users and the AI Plus tier marks a shift in its AI strategy, focusing on premium features for higher-paying subscribers.
The new restrictions do not affect the previously announced improvements in Gemini for multilingual households or its integration with Google Wallet.
Background
Gemini for Home now performs better in multilingual households, reducing instances where the AI misunderstands commands.
Google Wallet can now connect to Gemini, allowing the assistant to access and analyze spending data.
What's still developing
- Nothing material beyond the confirmed record.
