James Gunn Confirms He’s ‘Already’ Writing His Next Film Ahead of ‘Superman: Man of Tomorrow’
Confirmed
In Short: James Gunn has confirmed he is already writing his next film following the completion of the first assembly cut of 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow.' The film, which Gunn both wrote and directed, is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
Gunn announced the title and date in September 2025, and principal photography began in April 2026 under the working title 'Exodus,' wrapping on August 26, 2026.
In a recent update, Gunn revealed that he had to start writing his next film while waiting for the assembly cut of 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow.' He wrote on Threads, 'Already in it. I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!,' confirming his next project.
The sequel, 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow,' centers on an uneasy alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor, who are forced to work together against a greater threat: the superintelligent antagonist Brainiac.
Gunn revealed the first official look at Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor Warsuit, which has since been shown in an actual battle scene in set footage.
The film’s plot reportedly diverges from a typical hero-versus-villain narrative, with Superman and Lex Luthor forming a reluctant partnership to combat a far bigger danger.
Gunn’s follow-up to 'Superman' is officially titled 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow,' and it has now finished shooting, with the first assembly cut completed.
Gunn’s next film will also introduce Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, who is debuting in the HBO Max series 'Lanterns.'
Gunn began running DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in 2022, and he has praised Safran's leadership, saying, 'Peter’s the best.'
Gunn emphasized the importance of their collaboration, stating, 'He does everything I don’t do well. He keeps the ship steady, keeps everyone aligned, connects us with Jim Lee and the comics side and unifies departments that used to operate separately.'
