Ukraine's state-owned oil company, Ukrnafta, is installing concrete shelters at 13 gas stations in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, the company said on Sept. 28. The shelters will be available to anyone nearby and will initially be installed at stations in densely populated areas and near major roads.

Ukrnafta chief executive Bohdan Kukura said the company is continuing to repair damaged facilities and strengthen protection at its stations while maintaining fuel supplies. Gas stations suspend operations during higher-level air raid alerts, with staff and customers required to leave the premises and move to a safer location.

The move comes amid a weekslong Russian aerial campaign against Kyiv that has included repeated strikes on gas stations and other civilian infrastructure. On Sept. 28, Russian drones struck the capital, killing one person, injuring at least 21 others, and damaging the National Academy of Sciences building, a Dobrobut medical center, and other sites across the city.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, eight people were injured in the Russian attack. The Ukrainian Chess Federation (UCF) issued a protest on Sept. 28 after Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Presidential Office, accepted the title of vice president at the International Chess Federation (FIDE) alongside a former Russian minister.

In the city center, local media and Telegram channels reported a strike next to the main campus of Kyiv's Taras Shevchenko National University. The Kyiv Independent community helped raise more than $24,000 through an online store collection launched to mark World Press Freedom Day, enabling the purchase of 26 drone detectors to help protect independent journalists reporting from Ukraine’s front lines.

Ukrnafta has previously used similar shelters at gas stations in front-line regions and is now expanding the measure to Kyiv and the region amid intensifying Russian attacks on the capital and surrounding areas. The company has already installed gabion barriers at 25 facilities in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast.

Barriers at one of its Kyiv gas stations withstood a Russian strike last week, helping contain the explosion and limiting the spread of debris, Kukura added. When asked what concerned them most, 50% of Ukrainians cited corruption, while 40% cited Russia’s mass missile and drone attacks.
