Ukraine marked a nationwide moment of silence on Sunday, with loudspeakers across cities broadcasting the steady ticking of a clock to remember those killed in Russia’s war. This daily act of remembrance coincided with the first round of talks in Kyiv between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Zelensky greeted the US envoys at Kyiv’s St Sophia Cathedral, near the site of a recent Russian drone attack on Ukraine’s security services headquarters. The Ukrainian leader emphasized his readiness for constructive and realistic engagement focused on achieving peace, robust security guarantees, and a dignified post-war settlement.

Kushner, representing US President Donald Trump, expressed the US president’s determination to see an end to the war and thanked the UK, Germany, and France for their efforts in pursuing peace.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russian forces had paused aerial strikes on Kyiv starting at midnight on September 5, but rejected Ukraine’s proposal for a wider three-day frontline ceasefire.

Zelensky convened a strategy session with members of Ukraine’s negotiating delegation on Sunday, Sept. 15, ahead of the talks with the US envoys.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia had attacked Ukraine with 108 long-range drones and small cruise missiles earlier in the day, highlighting the ongoing conflict despite the peace talks.

Background

The attack, described by United24 as the deepest Ukrainian drone strike inside Russia since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, came as U.S. peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ukraine’s General Staff said the Makhachkala Sea Commercial Port in Russia’s Dagestan was hit overnight on September 10, with a fire recorded at the site.
