Tamil Nadu's government has issued a government order to establish seven new nursing colleges, adding 660 seats and 1,925 additional seats in existing institutions.
The new colleges will be located in Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli, and Coimbatore, with an annual intake of 100 students each, except for the Coimbatore college, which will have 60 students.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the initiative in the Assembly, stating that no new government nursing colleges had been started in Tamil Nadu since 2014.
The initiative aims to produce the necessary nursing, pharmacy, and paramedical personnel to provide quality medical services.
The total expenditure for the six colleges is estimated at Rs 270.27 crore, with Rs 45.04 crore allocated for each college.
The existing facilities at the respective medical colleges will be utilized to accommodate the new intake for the current academic year.
The manpower for the new colleges will be engaged only on a temporary or contract basis, with no permanent posts or additional pensionary liabilities created.
The 1,925 additional seats comprise 1,290 Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM), 440 BSc Nursing, 75 MSc Nursing, and 120 Post-Basic BSc Nursing seats.
The Tamil Nadu Dr M G R Medical University will meet the expenditure of Rs 270.26 crore for the project.
The Director of Medical Education and Research confirmed that land and other infrastructure required for establishing the six nursing colleges are available at the respective government medical colleges.

- According to a government order issued on September 16, the six nursing colleges will be established in Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai and Tirunelveli.
