Tamil Nadu to Add 660 Nursing Seats with 7 New Colleges

In Short: Tamil Nadu will establish seven new government nursing colleges, adding 660 seats and 1,925 additional seats in existing institutions.
The Tamil Nadu government has ordered the establishment of six new government nursing colleges, each with 100 BSc Nursing seats, and approved 1,925 additional seats in existing institutions, as part of efforts to expand nursing education.
According to the government order, the six new colleges will be established at Government Medical Colleges in Namakkal, Tiruchy, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirunelveli, with a total cost of Rs 270.26 crore, or Rs 45.04 crore per college.
The seventh nursing college will be established at Coimbatore Government Medical College and ESI Hospital, adding 60 BSc Nursing seats.
The 1,925 additional seats comprise 1,290 Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM), 440 BSc Nursing, 75 MSc Nursing, and 120 Post-Basic BSc Nursing seats.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the initiative in the Assembly, stating that no new government nursing colleges had been started in Tamil Nadu since 2014.
Vijay also noted that the initiative aims to produce the necessary nursing, pharmacy, and paramedical personnel to provide quality medical services.
Earlier this month, the state government issued a notification to fill 4,724 nursing vacancies across the state on a contractual basis.
The manpower for the new colleges will be engaged only on a temporary or contract basis, with no permanent posts or additional pensionary liabilities created.

- According to the GO, a seventh nursing college with 60 BSc Nursing seats will also be established at Coimbatore Government Medical College and ESI Hospital.

What's still developing
- It said the 600 seats in the six colleges would be offered during 2026-27 using existing facilities, subject to statutory approvals and affiliations.
- The colleges, which will offer BSc Nursing courses, will add 600 undergraduate seats annually.
- The existing facilities at the respective medical colleges will be utilised to accommodate the new intake for the current academic year.
