Kazakhstan Boosts Russian Gas Imports Amid Domestic Demand Surge
Developing
In Short: Kazakhstan has signed a deal to purchase more Russian gas, aiming to meet rising domestic needs.
Kazakhstan has signed a supplementary agreement with Russian energy giant Gazprom to purchase about 11 billion cubic meters of Russian gas this year, up significantly from the 4 million bcm it imported in 2025, according to Tass news agency.
The surge in domestic demand for natural gas is driving Kazakhstan's shift towards increased imports. Historically, Kazakhstan has been a net exporter of natural gas, with domestic production reaching a record 68.1 billion cubic meters in 2025.
The deal with Gazprom offers Kazakhstan a low-cost solution to meet its growing domestic demand without significantly impacting its export revenues. This strategy aligns with Uzbekistan's approach, which has seen a rapid decline in domestic gas production.
Uzbekistan, facing its own decline in domestic gas production, has adopted a strategy of buying Russian gas at lower prices and selling its own gas at higher prices to cover domestic demand while maintaining export earnings.
In 2025, Uzbek gas exports generated approximately $629 million in revenue, while mainly Russian gas imports were valued at $1.66 billion, highlighting the economic considerations behind the shift towards Russian gas.
