EU LNG Imports from Russia Plunge as Belgium Eliminates Russian Imports

In Short: Belgium has completely halted imports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG), leading to a 46% month-on-month drop in EU imports, according to a new report.
EU imports of Russian LNG fell 46% month-on-month to their lowest monthly volume since Russia's full-scale invasion began, according to a report by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).
Belgium, which imported 100% of its LNG from Russia in July, has now eliminated Russian imports, leaving France, Spain, and the Netherlands as the remaining importers.
French ports accounted for 57% of the EU's total LNG imports, making the bloc the largest buyer of Russian LNG despite the ongoing reduction in imports of Russian fossil fuels.
The EU is set to ban imports of Russian LNG from January 2027 under its REPowerEU regulation, with Belgium's move seen as a significant step towards achieving this goal.

- In August, the Australian Senate began discussing how to tighten its own Russian sanctions, with tackling the import of Russia-derived oil products identified as a priority.
