Pope Leo XIV to Visit Peru's Shrine of St. Turibius
Confirmed
In Short: Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru's Shrine of St. Turibius of Mogrovejo on November 14, 2026, as part of his South American tour.

On November 14, 2026, Pope Leo XIV will visit the Shrine of St. Turibius of Mogrovejo in Zaña, Peru, as part of his South American tour. The visit will coincide with the 300th anniversary of St. Turibius' canonization.
The Vatican’s itinerary places the pope at the shrine at 5:30 p.m., where he will hold a prayer service to conclude the celebrations marking the anniversary.
Gloria Burga, a lay pastoral worker in Zaña, told OSV News that as bishop, Pope Leo would set aside April 27, St. Turibius’ feast day, to celebrate Mass at the shrine.
During his 25-year tenure as archbishop, Pope Leo devoted approximately 17 years to pastoral visitations, traveling more than 25,000 miles, often on foot or by mule, across the Andes to reach remote Indigenous communities.
Betty Burga Campos, 56, who cooked 'aguadito con fe,' a traditional soup of rice, meat, and vegetables served by volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic, stands outside the Shrine of St. Turibius.
Pope Leo’s personal secretary, Peruvian priest Edgard Rimaycuna, will accompany him during the visit.
The Peruvian bishops’ conference called for prayers, entrusting the pope’s life and recovery with filial confidence to the merciful hands of the Lord of Miracles, a venerated image of the crucified Christ known as the Cristo Moreno.
Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming stop at Peru’s Shrine of St. Turibius of Mogrovejo will be more than a pilgrimage stop. It will symbolically converge the paths of two missionary bishops separated by more than four centuries.
The pope’s visit to Peru is expected to include stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Cusco, and Pucallpa, as well as visits to Argentina and Uruguay.
Pope Leo XIV, who became a Peruvian citizen in 2015 while serving as bishop of Chiclayo, will cap his 11-day journey to South America with a homecoming in Peru.
The official agenda of the pope’s trip to Peru is to be published shortly after Vatican confirmation is received around September 15, according to Bishop Carlos García Camader of Lurín, president of the Peruvian bishops’ conference.
What this adds
The visit to the Shrine of St. Turibius of Mogrovejo is part of a broader itinerary that includes significant stops in Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa, where the Pope will meet with communities of Amazonian peoples in the department of Ucayali.
Pope Leo XIV’s connection to Peru runs deep, as he arrived in the region as an Augustinian missionary in 1985 and later served as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023.
Background
Pope Leo XIV was presented with a book documenting a pilgrimage inspired by Peru's Eucharistic miracle.
What's confirmed
- Gloria Burga, a lay pastoral worker in Zaña, told OSV News that as bishop he would set aside April 27, St. Turibius’ feast day, to celebrate Mass at the shrine.
- The Vatican’s itinerary places the pope at the shrine at 5:30 p.m.
- The Peruvian bishops’ conference — in which Pope Leo served as second vice president while he was bishop of Chiclayo — called for prayers, “entrusting his life and recovery with filial confidence to the merciful hands of the Lord of Miracles” — a venerated image of the crucified Christ known as the Cristo Moreno.
What's still developing
- 31, 2026, where a banner bearing an image of Pope Leo XIV hangs from one of its towers.
- Launched in 2013, Aleteia is a free online daily news publication.
- In the photo, the pope can be seen celebrating Mass in green vestments, accompanied by one of his personal secretaries, Peruvian Father Edgard Iván Rimaycuna Inga.
- Chulucanas is the site of then-Father Robert Prevost’s first missionary assignment in northern Peru in 1985, when the man who would become pope — and who has held Peruvian citizenship since 2015 — arrived as an Augustinian missionary in this region entrusted to his order.
- Robert Francis Prevost was born in Chicago, became a naturalized Peruvian citizen in 2015, and led the Diocese of Chiclayo, in northern Peru, from 2015 to 2023 before his election as Pope Leo XIV in May 2025.
- "What's being promoted," by Peruvian church leaders "is how important it is to have a Peruvian pope and how good it is that he's returning," Jesuit Father José Luis Gordillo, told OSV News.
- Then-Bishop Prevost received him into the Diocese of Chiclayo, and in July the priest published “Huellas de pastor” (“Footprints of a Shepherd”), a book that traces Father Prevost’s path from Chicago to the papacy and sets his life alongside that of St. Turibius.
- “There I came to know first-hand the faith of a people from whom I received so much,” the pope wrote of Peru.
- “The best way to honor his memory,” Pope Leo told the bishops, is to be challenged by his ministry and imitate him.
- That experience, he said, taught him more fully what it meant to be a shepherd and drew him especially close to St. Turibius, another bishop who had “come from afar” and made Peru his own through pastoral charity.
