According to Matthew Simari, head of product management for Edits, the app allows users to switch between agentic and manual editing methods.

Edits for Mac also includes Instagram's licensed and royalty-free audio libraries, sound and video effects, and unlimited automatic captions.

Users can publish directly to Instagram from the Mac app, with support for tagging, locations, and trial reels.

Instagram's Edits already has more than 50 million active users, according to Meta's most recent earnings call.

Instagram first launched Edits on phones in April 2025 as a rival to CapCut.

While CapCut has been available on desktop for Windows and Mac since 2021, Instagram's desktop version is only available for Mac.

Instagram plans to update the Mac app every week, but there is no version for Windows yet.

What this adds

Instagram's decision to expand Edits to the Mac aims to cater to creators who find their phone-based projects too complex.

The app's comprehensive features and direct publishing capabilities to Instagram make it a strong contender in the desktop video editing market.
