On a historic night for democratic socialists, Mamdani says midterms show power of working-class voters
Confirmed
In Short: U.S. President Donald Trump met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion, the mayor's official residence in Manhattan, on a historic night for democratic socialists.
Mamdani said the conversation was productive and that he had raised the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants during the meeting.
"This is an issue that could either bring stability to the lives of Haitian immigrants or take that stability away," Mamdani noted, emphasizing the importance of addressing the TPS termination.
"Mayor Mamdani is going to be a great mayor, and he's off to a good start," Trump said, despite months of criticism from Republicans.
"I don't want Mayor Mamdani to be a bad mayor or a terrible mayor. He clearly has good potential," Trump added, striking a notably cordial tone towards the mayor.
"I had a productive conversation with President Trump," Mamdani said, highlighting the areas of agreement and disagreement during the meeting.
"Mayor Mamdani looks forward to learning from the comparable approach Norway has taken in its school system nationwide," Mamdani said, indicating his interest in international collaboration.
"I’ve met many mayors here, some were great and some were not," Trump said at the news conference, providing context for his meeting with Mamdani.
What this adds
The meeting between Trump and Mamdani marks a significant moment for democratic socialists, as Mamdani is one of five mayors who share many policy goals and are having a collective moment on the world stage.
Mamdani's allies are pushing to cut ties with certain figures, such as Sarah Messing, who has been criticized for her political views, including a meme calling Mamdani an “America-hating jihadist.”
What's confirmed
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Council Speaker Julie Menin backed the legislation.
- Drivers have defended the industry as a heavily regulated, historic attraction that supports immigrant families and draws visitors.
What's still developing
- They met again in February, just after Mamdani took office.
- Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul el Sayed announced new campaign stops that will feature Democratic fundraising heavyweights former President Barack Obama, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
- Mamdani’s allies are pushing to cut her loose.
- (70 Faces Media, the parent company of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and New York Jewish Week, receives UJA funding.) A number of progressives were skeptical of the decision at the time, citing her background as an appointee of Mamdani’s predecessor, Eric Adams, and her past criticism of campus pro-Palestinian protests.
- While Yang said Mamdani’s base, including the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, have given Mamdani a lot of leeway in his first year, the mayor’s record of work with the Trump administration will be more closely judged when he runs for reelection in 2029.
- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is giving special access to a network of more than 200 social media influencers who take City Hall talking points and videos to promote municipal programs online to residents, according to a new report.
- That is exactly what is happening in New York, where a coalition of small business owners went to court last week to stop the Mamdani regime from using taxpayer dollars to compete directly against them.
- Messing — who is Jewish and a staunch advocate for Israel — has previously come under fire for her outspoken political views, notably during the 2025 New York City mayoral race when she shared a meme calling Zohran Mamdani an “America-hating jihadist.” On social media, critics called out the “Islamophobic” nature of some of Messing's posts.
- All five of those mayors are fellow democratic socialists who share many of Mamdani’s policy goals and, bolstered by his election last year, are having a collective moment on the world stage.
- “Mayor Mamdani looks forward to learning from the comparable approach Norway has taken in its school system nationwide.” Given Mamdani’s already global renown and social media reach, the annual gathering of diplomats represents a significant opportunity for the 34-year-old to bolster his brand and meet with fellow leftists like Støre.
