Hubble Uncovers Oxygen Mystery in Dwarf Galaxies

Confirmed

Science Desk

In Short: Researchers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have uncovered a cosmic mystery in 37 nearby dwarf galaxies, revealing a significant absence of oxygen.

The study, which included observations of galaxies like NGC 4449, found that much of the oxygen they expected to see was missing.

The Hubble Space Telescope, which has been operational for over 30 years, continues to provide critical insights into the universe.

In addition to the oxygen mystery, Hubble has also provided new data on Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star.

Astronomers using Hubble and ground-based telescopes have discovered that a companion star is reshaping Betelgeuse's environment.

This companion star is believed to be influencing Betelgeuse's behavior, solving a long-standing mystery.

The study used archival optical imaging data from Hubble to resolve stellar populations and determine star-formation histories and compositions.
