Gina Hinojosa Defeats Greg Abbott in Texas Governor Race
Confirmed
In Short: Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the Texas governor race, marking the first time the Lone Star State will have a Democratic governor since 1995.

Gina Hinojosa (D) defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the Texas governor race, marking the first time the Lone Star State will have a Democratic governor since 1995. The Associated Press called the race shortly after 9:15 p.m., with Hinojosa leading by a significant margin.
Abbott conceded the race in a speech Tuesday night, acknowledging that there was no way for him to win mathematically. He thanked his supporters for their 12 years of support, saying, 'Leading this state has been the greatest honor I’ve ever had. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your love. Thank you for making Texas, Texas. And God bless you all, and God bless the great state of Texas.'
Hinojosa, who previously served on the Austin Independent School District board and has represented a Central Austin-area district in the Texas House since 2017, expressed her gratitude to her supporters. She said, 'Texas, my faith in you never wavered,' moments after Abbott conceded the race around 10 p.m.
As of 10:21 p.m., Hinojosa had 57% of the vote, or 4,022,000 votes, to Abbott’s 41.7%, or 2,946,679 votes, according to KEYE. Initial precinct counts showed Hinojosa had won 52.8% of the vote by 11:30 p.m., according to FOX 7 Austin. The final vote count, as of 9:15 a.m. On November 4, 2026, showed Hinojosa with 53% of the vote, or 5,230,908 votes, to Abbott’s 46%, or 4,524,948 votes, according to myfoxzone.com.
Abbott praised his team and staff, highlighting strides made during his tenure, including actions on the Texas-Mexico border, adding more than 2.6 million jobs, and building up the state’s water and power infrastructure. He also stated that he would assist Hinojosa and her team during the transition period.
Hinojosa thanked her supporters, saying, 'With a Texas chip on our shoulder, we showed them anything is possible.' She will take office in January 2027, ending 32 years of Republican control of the governor’s mansion.
The race was closely watched, with polls predicting an extremely close contest between Hinojosa and Abbott. Abbott’s campaign had spent $180 million since last year, and billionaire Elon Musk had spent tens of millions of dollars to back Republicans, but these efforts were not enough to secure Abbott’s fourth term.
Dan Patrick, a Republican state senator, also conceded the race in a statement late Tuesday night.
