"The organising committee for AFC Asian Cup approved to reschedule the flagship national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions," the AFC said in a statement.

The Saudi government has invested heavily in sports through its Public Investment Fund in recent years, and the Asian Cup was seen as an early rehearsal for hosting the World Cup in 2034.

The decision to delay the 24-team tournament marks another setback for the kingdom’s sporting ambitions, following the postponement of the 2029 Asian Winter Games because of development delays at a planned desert ski resort in Neom.

The Socceroos will have to wait another year for the chance to win a second Asian Cup, with the 2027 tournament postponed by nearly a year.
