Carrefour, a French-owned supermarket, said the incident had affected 15 of its Belgian stores, but measures were taken to ensure all shops remained open.

Around 40 Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were affected, with smaller numbers of shops hit in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Estonia.

The incident is suspected to be a cyber-attack, with the National Cyber Security Centre working to understand the full details.
