In Short: The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced its 2026 honorees, including Paul Anka, David Mamet, and Andy Garcia, as the institution faces financial and legal challenges.

The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced its 2026 honorees on Monday, recognizing Paul Anka, David Mamet, Andy Garcia, David Foster, and Barbara Mandrell for their contributions to American culture through the performing arts.
Andy Garcia, a versatile actor and director, will be honored for his work in film and theater, as well as his achievements as a music producer. Garcia has earned an Oscar nomination for 'The Godfather: Part III' and has starred in numerous acclaimed films.
Paul Anka, a pop crooner and songwriter, will be honored for his nearly seven-decade career. Anka has written or co-written iconic songs like 'My Way' and the theme for 'The Tonight Show' with Johnny Carson.
Barbara Mandrell, a celebrated country singer, will be honored for her two-time win of the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award and her significant impact on the genre.
President Donald Trump, who hosted last year's ceremony, issued a statement recognizing the honorees' lifelong work that has shaped American culture and inspired generations of audiences.
Despite the announcement, the Kennedy Center remains in turmoil. The institution is facing a lawsuit by a Democratic congresswoman challenging plans to close the venue for a two-year, $257 million renovation. Kennedy Center officials have cited structural safety concerns and financial strain as reasons for the closure.
The 2026 Kennedy Center Honors ceremony will take place on December 7 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., marking the first time the event will be held offsite from the Kennedy Center's Opera House.
