In Short: California counties are issuing guidelines that may restrict press access at polling sites, while Just the Network launches a new streaming app for midterm election coverage.

CalMatters reported that some California counties are issuing guidelines that appear to restrict press access at polling sites, potentially violating state statutes and the First Amendment. Kern County, for instance, initially prohibited media personnel from filming within 100 feet of poll sites and ballot drop boxes, among other limitations.

A coalition of media outlets, led by CalMatters, and a First Amendment advocacy group sent a letter to Kern County raising concerns about these restrictions. The coalition has identified similar prohibitions in other counties.

The Indian Express noted that polls will close at different times across the country, with election results expected to begin coming in on Tuesday evening. Voters are advised to check their assigned polling place, opening and closing times, and voter ID requirements with their local election office.

NBCWashington reported that former FBI Director James Comey is facing a third federal case, stemming from President Donald Trump's firing of Comey in 2017 after he launched an investigation into Russian election interference and potential ties to the Trump campaign.

In a separate development, the Justice Department has sent letters to state election officials warning them to preserve ballots, voter-registration records, and other election materials for 22 months after a federal election. Such failures are punishable by up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

CalMatters and Justthenews reported different aspects of the election coverage landscape, with CalMatters focusing on press restrictions and Justthenews on the launch of a new streaming app. Both publications, however, underscore the importance of accurate and accessible election coverage.
