The community rebuild began on Wednesday, September 23, and concluded on Saturday, September 26, with more than 200 volunteers and community members participating.

The wildfires in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood left three out of four residents displaced, with the Palisades Fire destroying over 23,000 acres of land.

Volunteers engaged in various projects such as landscaping, site clearing, and other revitalization efforts to help restore homes and neighborhoods.

On September 23, speeches were held at Habitat for Humanity’s base camp located at the Corpus Christi rectory on the 800 block of Toyopa Drive.

Habitat for Humanity, with the support of an anonymous donor, raised the majority of funds needed to begin the Pope Francis build on Nov. 14, 2015.

Chris Eastland, a local Church member who volunteered at the event, said, “We loved being able to provide tangible assistance to individuals directly affected by the fires and at the same time develop deeper connections with our neighbors as we served side by side in this effort.”

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Traci Park thanked volunteers for their generosity, emphasizing that it is efforts such as this that keep the Palisades community resilient amidst uncertainty.

The four-day initiative, organized by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, aims to help families struggling with rebuilding costs, insurance shortfalls, and prolonged displacement after the disaster.

Erin Rank, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, said, “This important work is critical to these families, and this week volunteers will be helping families at all stages of recovery.”

The localized recovery event coincides with Habitat for Humanity International’s 50th anniversary year, marking five decades of residential construction, community development, and affordable homeownership initiatives.
