A high-speed train collision near the central Spanish city of Toledo on Wednesday killed 68 people and injured scores more, according to officials. The crash occurred when a Renfe train rear-ended a stationary Iryo train.

The collision took place in the Castilla-La Mancha region, south of Madrid. Renfe, the state railway operator, confirmed that the main high-speed line from Madrid to southern Spain had been suspended following the accident.

Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, said 397 passengers were on the Renfe train and 147 passengers on the Iryo train, totaling more than 540 people.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente told reporters that the collision came after a train was ordered to continue its journey despite a technical failure affecting the automatic control system that halted all services on a 69-kilometer stretch of track.

Puente said the train's engineers were not responsible for the collision, and officials are still working to determine the train's speed at the time of the collision. Puente estimated it may have been traveling at approximately 124 mph.

The scene of the crash showed one train embedded into another, with some carriages lying on their side in tangles of metal debris at the bottom of an embankment. Scores of passengers were taken to hospitals, with 15 in critical condition.

Relatives of the victims gathered at a school in Urda, around 130 kilometers (80 miles) south of Madrid, to inquire about their loved ones. The Spanish government declared three days of mourning to honor the victims.

David Gómez, a construction worker, was working nearby when he heard the crash and rushed to help. He described the scene as chaotic, with people on the floor and suitcases scattered about.

Spain's conservative opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, demanded answers and urged the national government to conduct an independent review of the entire railway network.

The crash is the second high-speed rail accident in Spain this year, raising questions about the country's rail safety. The first accident in January killed 46 people.

The royal couple expressed their condolences, saying they were deeply saddened and concerned by the train accident in Urda.

The disruption forced trains in the affected area to stop, but the central control center subsequently authorized the Renfe train to resume traveling without speed restrictions, leading to the collision.
