Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is at the center of an espionage case involving a Chinese businesswoman suspected of gathering intelligence for Beijing.
The woman, identified as Alice Huang or Huang Le, is an executive at a Singapore-based data center company called Megaspeed.
US intelligence agencies have reportedly identified Alice Huang as an intelligence asset for Beijing, with whom Jensen Huang developed a close relationship.
According to reports, US President Donald Trump was briefed on the findings roughly a year ago but took no action, wary of disrupting Nvidia's chip sales and US-China trade relations.
Nvidia stated that Megaspeed was a routine regional customer and that it had previously investigated and dismissed as groundless allegations that the company was smuggling chips to China.
Surveillance of Alice Huang revealed that she had cultivated a close relationship with Jensen Huang, raising concerns about her access to sensitive information.
In a statement to the New York Times, Nvidia said there was nothing out of the ordinary about the CEO’s interactions with Alice Huang.
"Meetings with customers are part of a CEO's job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year," a Nvidia spokesperson said.
White House officials are reportedly alarmed by Alice Huang’s access to the head of Nvidia, given the close relationship he’s developed with Trump.
The surveillance later revealed that companies linked to Alice Huang continued purchasing Nvidia chips well into the current year.
The Chinese embassy in Washington dismissed the allegations, stating that the US is waging a campaign of “baseless smears and slanders” against China.
