The Vatican announced that Pope Leo will travel more than 19,000 miles on 14 flights during the South American trip.

Upon his return to Rome on November 18, Pope Leo will celebrate a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to mark the 400th anniversary of the basilica’s dedication.

The Pope’s doctors said on October 21 that he would need no further cancer treatment after undergoing video-assisted surgery on October 13, in which the lower lobe of his right lung was removed.

The Vatican released a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone, the papal doctor, saying that based on the Pope’s current clinical status, there are no contraindications preventing him from undertaking his upcoming apostolic journey.

The Pope’s itinerary includes meetings with authorities, interfaith leaders, prisoners, and workers, as well as three prayer vigils with young people.

Pope Leo celebrated his 71st birthday on Monday, September 15, and said, “Many of you may not know that my mother was a librarian, and today I’m here on my birthday specifically to say hello to all of you.”

The Pope traveled to Genazzano, a small town east of Rome, to celebrate an evening Mass at the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel on the vigil of the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Vatican published a papal decree repealing 2021 salary cuts imposed by Pope Francis as part of the Holy See’s COVID-19 cost-saving measures.

Pope Leo said in the decree that the salary-containing measures can now be overcome, as the institutions of the Holy See and the Vatican City State will continue to ensure economic sustainability.

The Pope’s schedule also includes a Mass at Verano Cemetery on November 2, the same cemetery where he celebrated the feast last year.

What this adds

The Vatican’s announcement of Pope Leo’s travel plans and his doctors’ clearance for the trip came just weeks after his surgery, indicating a swift recovery.

The Pope’s decision to celebrate Mass at Verano Cemetery on November 2 highlights the significance of the All Souls’ Day observance in the Catholic tradition.
