In Short: Marine Atlan’s Cannes winner La Gradiva, her first feature, received nominations for International Feature, Breakthrough Director, Original Screenplay, and Breakthrough Performer for Colas Quignard.

The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced today the nominations for the 36th edition of The Gothams, singling out 42 feature films and 25 performances in 11 award categories. Five films—All of a Sudden, Clarissa, La Gradiva, The Invite, and Tender Loving Care—lead the nominations with four each.

Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, said, “It’s a pleasure to announce this year’s nominees. It has been a remarkable year for film, with audiences turning out in theaters for bold, distinctive work from first-time filmmakers and established artists alike.”

Marine Atlan’s Cannes winner La Gradiva, her first feature, received nominations for International Feature, Breakthrough Director, Original Screenplay, and Breakthrough Performer for Colas Quignard. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, a three-hour drama about the friendship between a French woman and a Japanese woman at an elder care facility, earned nominations for Best International Feature, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting Performance for Tao Okamoto.

Olivia Wilde’s The Invite, an English-language remake of the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs, is nominated for Best Feature, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Performance for Penélope Cruz. The film is also in contention for the Audience Award.

The Gotham Awards ceremony will take place on November 30 in New York City. The Gothams have expanded their eligibility criteria in recent years, removing the $35 million budget cap on submissions and focusing on films with strong opening-weekend per-theater averages.

Among the lead performance nominees are Andrew Scott for Elsinore, Jeon Do-yeon for Possible Love, John Malkovich for Wild Horse Nine, Mahershala Ali for Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Julianne Moore for The Debut, and Sophie Okonedo for Clarissa. Supporting Performance nominees include Tom Courtenay for Queen at Sea, Esmé Creed-Miles for Sense and Sensibility, and Adam Driver for Paper Tiger.

The Gothams have also recognized performers in gender-neutral categories since 2021. This year’s Audience Award nominees include Backrooms, La Bola Negra, The Drama, The Invite, Michael, Obsession, Project Hail Mary, and You Can See Everything.

The nominees were selected by committees of critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. The Gotham Awards aim to elevate independent film and celebrate the creative community that has been at the heart of the Gothams for more than three decades.
