Skarsgård recalled his initial concerns about the costume, which was eased by Colman's enthusiastic reaction. He said, "Everything is exaggerated; he’s a work of art. Alex fills the Wicker Husband with a beautiful soul."

The film, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, is based on Ursula Mills' short story "The Wicker Husband." It explores themes of human connection and criticism of the patriarchy.

In the quaint village of Wicker, women are defined by their relationships to men. Colman's character, the Fisherwoman, commissions a husband from the local basket weaver, played by Peter Dinklage.

Colman highlighted the film's satirical elements, noting, "None of the women [in the film] have their own names, except for the fisherwoman, and she’s shunned and ostracized for being sort of ugly and smelly, and unmarriable. But she shows them."

The film's unique visual effects were developed by the Wētā team, who spent over 18 months researching and manufacturing the wicker costume.

Skarsgård mentioned the challenge of portraying the Wicker Husband, saying, "I was quite intimidated when I read [the script] because I tend to be drawn toward more conflicted characters with more internal turmoil and darkness."

Colman and Skarsgård's performances were praised for their chemistry and the film's overall uniqueness. Colman said, "It was really exciting to be part of that journey. Like we're making something quite unique here. There's freedom in that."

The film premiered at the 2026 Zurich Film Festival, where Skarsgård and Colman walked the green carpet together.

Wicker is generating significant buzz, with critics noting the film's blend of humor and social commentary.
