1Password lets AI agents use your passwords without seeing them
· Confirmed
In Short: 1Password is now letting AI agents use user passwords without seeing them, enhancing security.

1Password has introduced a new feature called '1Password for Agents' that allows AI agents to use user passwords without ever handling or seeing them.
This works by connecting an AI agent, such as Meta’s Muse, to 1Password. When the agent encounters a sign-in form, it requests permission to sign in, and 1Password provides the necessary credentials upon user approval.
Once the login is successful, 1Password removes the credential from the agent's view, ensuring that the agent cannot reuse or read the password.
The process involves a unique digital key that verifies the agent's identity to 1Password, ensuring secure communication.
According to 1Password, the actual sign-in is handled by 1Password itself, not the AI agent, keeping the credentials hidden.
Users retain control over which logins the agent can access, with the rest of the password vault remaining inaccessible to the agent.
John Torrey, Chief Business Officer at 1Password, stated, “Every major shift in technology changes how people sign in, and personal agents are the biggest one since the web.”
1Password for Agents is now available for Mac users, with the company working on integrating with other popular AI agents.
The Verge reported that this is the first browser integration to allow agents to access credentials without granting direct access.
While there is still a level of trust involved, this solution appears to be a significant step towards safer AI integration with personal accounts.
What's confirmed
- When an agent reaches a sign-in form, it uses a unique digital key to verify its identity to 1Password.
- 1Password has started letting AI agents sign in to your accounts without ever handling your password.
What's still developing
- As AI agents continue to get more capable, account credentials are becoming more of a hang-up. 1Password is today offering its solution – giving AI agents the ability to use your passwords without actually seeing them, all while leaving you in control.
- Popular password management app 1Password today announced 1Password for Agents, a platform that gives AI agents safe access to user credentials for completing tasks.
- If you choose to approve the request, 1Password will fill in the required login information instead of handing it to the agent.
- But giving them passwords creates a security problem: an agent may need to use a credential without needing to know it. 1Password is introducing an approach designed to let AI agents sign in to supported services without directly exposing users' passwords.
