Tarantino Screens 'Cliff Booth' Sequel at AFI Fest
Confirmed
In Short: Tarantino introduced the screening by saying, 'Well, I could talk a little bit about The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, or I could show you the first 17 minutes,' opting for the latter.

Quentin Tarantino surprised the audience at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles with the first 17 minutes of 'The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth,' a sequel to his 2019 film 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.'
The film picks up in 1977, eight years after the original movie's 1969 timeline, with Brad Pitt reprising his role as Cliff Booth, now working as a projectionist at the New Beverly Cinema.
Tarantino revealed that he had never seen 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' on Imax or at the Chinese Theatre, adding, 'I asked Burt Reynolds to play George Spahn, and he said yes, and we became friendly.... And then he passed away before we could make the film.'
The 17-minute preview showed Booth as a kind of shady bag man and fixer, with a promising relationship developing between Booth and his father, played by Peter Weller.
Tarantino explained, 'It’s not about a story, the fact that it’s just about this folklore that’s a mix of real things that happened back then and real people and a real industry, and then also this kind of fantastical version that I created.'
The film features a star-studded cast including Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and others.
Tarantino noted, 'Whatever it is you're thinking, it's not what you think,' hinting at the film's plot twists.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is set to release in IMAX on Nov. 25 and stream on Netflix on Dec. 23.
What this adds
The film's first 17 minutes were screened at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood during a special Q&A session.
Tarantino reflected on the decision to revisit Cliff Booth, saying, 'There was this aspect of him as like a paperback hero, like a series of paperbacks of Cliff Booth getting involved with this adventure or that adventure. Now a misadventure.'

Produced by Tarantino, Ceán Chaffin, David Heyman, Stacey Sher, and Brad Pitt, it is a standalone sequel and spin-off to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), with Pitt and Timothy Olyphant reprising their respective roles as stunt double Cliff Booth and Western actor James Stacy.
What's confirmed
- “Well, I could talk a little bit about The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, or I could show you the first 17 minutes,” Tarantino said at the end of his special-event Q&A session at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
- Quentin Tarantino surprised the crowd during a Q&A and screening of his 10-time Oscar-nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on Friday night at AFI Fest in Los Angeles by screening the first 17 minutes of its sequel The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
- "I asked Burt Reynolds to play George Spahn, and he said yes, and we became friendly.... And then he passed away before we could make the film. But we did get to rehearse with him, and we did a script reading with him. The last performance Burt Reynolds ever gave was as George Spahn in that script reading." (Bruce Dern would play Spahn in the film.) He also revealed new details about Margot Robbie 's secret second part in the film.
- “I tend to not remember good reviews of mine in quotes; I kind of remember the bad reviews in quotes, but I don’t really remember good reviews of mine in quotes. But one quote that I do remember somebody writing about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it was like, ‘This seems like the first world Quentin Tarantino has ever created that he would like to live in,’ and there is that aspect,” he told the crowd.
- The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth is releasing in IMAX on Nov. 25 and streaming Dec. 23 on Netflix.
- And he’s further entertained and intrigued when he meets other characters in Charlie’s world, from his knowing wife Toni (Carla Gugino) to pro football champion turned screen star Roderick “Hot Rod” Harrison (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).
- Pitt returns as Cliff Booth and he’s joined in the film by Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian.
What's still developing
- Brad Pitt revises his Oscar-winning role as Booth, a stuntman and sidekick to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton in the original 2019 film.
- Fincher said earlier this week that he had to cut 60 pages from Tarantino’s script, after he said the first draft he read was 230 pages.
- "So there’s never like, 'Oh, I don’t know what I'm going to do. I don't have anything to write.' I always have some little thing that I'm taking five years to do."
- When we left Cliff Booth at the end of “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” he was coming off of a sojourn in Italy to double his pal Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio); as the new film begins in June 1977, his primary connection to the film industry is a job as a projectionist at the New Beverly Cinema. (A fun in-joke that got a big laugh from the AFI Fest audience, most of whom were probably well aware that Tarantino now owns that theater.) Booth’s real profession seems to be as a kind of shady bag man and fixer, though the 17 minutes we saw at the Chinese wasn’t enough to give a strong sense of where the plot will go.
- For the 900 or so Tarantino fans who packed the house, just seeing the director’s 2019 crowd-pleaser on the huge Chinese screen followed by a lively Tarantino Q&A would have been enough — but then Quentin had a surprise for the audience.
- Tarantino, who wrote the screenplay, shared his decision to revisit Cliff Booth.
