Trade War Limits Exposed
· Confirmed
In Short: Trump’s Washington summit with Xi this week exposed the limits of US-China cooperation on AI safety.

The United States has opened another front in its economic pressure campaign against Iran, this time targeting the railways Tehran increasingly relies on as maritime trade becomes more difficult.
According to Shahriar Naghizadeh, director general for foreign trade at Iran's railway authority, quoted by the semi-official Mehr news agency, Iran has around 15,000 kilometers (9,300 miles) of main and secondary railway lines, more than 35,000 wagons, and nearly 500 diesel locomotives.
Since the US maritime blockade sharply restricted Iran's southern trade routes, Tehran has tried to move more goods through its land borders and railway connections with China, Central Asia, Russia, and Turkey.
Alireza Salavati, managing director of London-based Middle East Analytica, told DW that while rail is increasingly useful for Iran, it should not be mistaken as a replacement for maritime trade.
Salavati noted, 'A workable overland route now links China and Iran, but I would not call it a replacement for sea freight.' He added, 'Reliability matters as much as speed.'
Capacity constraints, delays, and costs limit rail's ability to replace maritime trade, according to DW.
The bench enabled partisan redistricting, cut limits on campaign financing, and narrowed voting protections during its last term, aligning with its yearslong pattern of conservative interpretation of the Constitution.
The Canadian Dollar (CAD) retains part of its gains against the US Dollar (USD), but risk aversion stemming from escalating tensions in the Middle East limits the Loonie’s advance despite higher Oil prices.
According to Apple, the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses an 'innovative battery-firmware solution' that limits battery capacity to below 20Wh between when the iPhone is manufactured and its delivery to a customer.
Dario Amodei said Anthropic would slow development, reiterating his recent call for 'pacing the frontier.'
The US targeting of Iran's railways highlights the extent to which economic pressure can impact a country's trade routes and infrastructure.
Despite Iran's efforts to diversify its trade routes, the reliability and capacity of rail transport remain significant challenges compared to maritime trade.

What's still developing
- "A 15-day train is little use if the container waits a week to depart, or if the bank or insurer will not touch it."
- Trump called Netanyahu again, telling him in a brief call that now that Iran and Israel had each “had their fun,” that Israel should stand down.
- Today, with yet more fresh promises of a so-called “peace deal” that is nearly ready to be signed by Trump and Iranian leadership, the Israeli military is bombing the suburbs of Beirut despite ongoing claims of a “ceasefire.” Trying to understand the current doom loop, it’s vital we remember how we got here.
