In an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco described crawling through the damaged school building, hearing children crying for help, and confronting the 16-year-old shooter.

Giamanco told Oregon Public Broadcasting, 'I want to apologize for not saving their babies, that’s probably the biggest thing for me right now.'

Giamanco said he felt a surge of panic and grabbed a.40-caliber handgun from his truck to confront the gunman, who had already killed three children and a teacher.

The shooter, identified as a 16-year-old boy, was killed by Giamanco after the boy had been tackled by a teacher who threw her phone at him and wrestled for the gun.

Superintendent Steven Cook of Bend-La Pine Schools expressed shock and grief over the tragedy, extending sympathy to all affected by the violence.

Giamanco's actions were acknowledged by Oregon Governor Tina Kotek as heroic, but she noted the emotional burden they carry.

The school, which has 459 enrolled students, was the scene of a shooting that left four dead and two critically injured.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of school shootings in the United States, with 235 such incidents reported at K-12 schools last year.

Giamanco's wife told the media that her husband is a 'real true hero' whose actions gave him an opening to stop the attacker.

Despite his heroic actions, Giamanco feels a profound sense of failure for not being able to save more lives that day.
