Kenya confirmed four new cases of the Ebola Bundibugyo virus on Saturday, including three health workers who treated the country’s first patient, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to nine, according to the health ministry.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) reported that the man was a close family member of Kenya’s first Ebola patient, who had traveled from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through Uganda before arriving in Kenya and dying at a Nairobi hospital on October 5.

Thecanadianpressnews (Canada) reported that a Kenyan citizen who had been living in Congo before returning to Nairobi over the weekend became Kenya’s first confirmed case of Ebola and the country’s first death from the disease, sparking urgent contact-tracing efforts.

Kenyans (Kenya) reported that the confirmed Ebola cases have risen to eight after the Ministry of Health announced a new infection on Sunday.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Kenyans (Kenya) both reported that the latest patient, a 24-year-old man and close family member of the first case, tested positive on October 19 after developing symptoms while already in quarantine.

Sight Magazine (Australia) and Thecanadianpressnews (Canada) reported that the current Ebola outbreak is the fastest-spreading Ebola epidemic ever recorded, with people continuing to be infected faster than frontline workers can track and respond to new cases.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Kenyans (Kenya) reported that despite the nine infections, Kenya has not imposed restrictions on travel, trade, or public gatherings, with authorities saying the country remains open for business.

Thecanadianpressnews (Canada) and Sight Magazine (Australia) reported that the health minister, Muhammad Pate, said authorities had begun tracing 44 people identified as contacts of the patient.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Kenyans (Kenya) reported that 128 of 130 known case contacts are being monitored in quarantine for 21 days.

Sight Magazine (Australia) and Thecanadianpressnews (Canada) reported that the government is strengthening its response coordination and case investigation, while monitoring and listing contacts for enhanced disease surveillance.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Kenyans (Kenya) reported that isolation units across 27 high-risk counties in Kenya have been identified and assessed, case managers trained, and Ebola surveillance tools updated so that suspected cases can be quickly identified, reported, and investigated.
