Federal authorities arrested a 17-year-old Texas boy for allegedly plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self, R-Texas, and carry out a separate terrorist attack in North Texas on behalf of ISIS.
According to Breitbart News, the juvenile may have been planning to assassinate Self with a firearm at a local event on October 17, 2026. However, investigators have not yet established the details of the alleged assassination plot or determined which event Self might have been targeted at.
Self, who is up for re-election, has been one of the most ardent critics of Sharia Law in Congress. He has introduced a nonbinding congressional resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States.
In a statement posted on X, Self thanked the FBI and law enforcement for stopping the threat, saying, 'I am grateful to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping this threat.'
Self told CBS News Texas that the first he knew of the threat was when the feds told him they’d arrested someone out to gain notoriety by trying 'to shoot at me.' He added, 'I understand that they’ve known about this kid for a while,' and expressed relief that the FBI took action in this case.
Self, who is seeking reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives for Texas' 3rd Congressional District, has been going head-to-head with Democrat Evan Hunt in his reelection bid, facing the same opponent for the third time.
Self emphasized his commitment to defending freedom, stating, 'I served 25 years in the military because defending freedom was worth the sacrifice. This only strengthens my resolve. I will not back down.'
The incident highlights the ongoing concerns about Islamic extremism and the potential threats posed by radicalized individuals. Self has been vocal about the dangers of Sharia law, describing it as 'a direct threat to our Constitution and Western values.'
The arrest of the Texas teen underscores the need for vigilance and the importance of law enforcement in identifying and neutralizing potential threats before they materialize.
Self's supporters and critics alike will be watching closely as the investigation unfolds and the political landscape in Texas' 3rd District continues to evolve.
What this adds
The exact nature of the event Self was supposed to attend on October 17, 2026, remains unclear.
