1Password announced today a new integration with Anthropic's Claude AI, designed to allow the AI to sign in to websites without ever seeing the user's password or two-factor authentication code.

The new feature, called Agentic Mode, ensures that when a compatible AI agent takes control of the browser, the 1Password extension automatically locks down the vault, making only the credentials explicitly approved for that task available.

According to 1Password, the password, one-time code, and other secrets never enter Claude’s context, memory, or Anthropic’s systems, ensuring a high level of security.

The launch also introduces a 'zero-exposure' method that requires users to manually approve logins via biometric authentication each time the AI needs to use a password.

This approach aims to address privacy and security concerns while enabling AI agents to complete multi-step workflows without stopping for a new login each time.

CNET quoted an expert who expressed cautious optimism about the new feature, noting that while they would normally be wary about giving an AI agent access to a password manager, 1Password seems to have several good guardrails in place.

However, there are still concerns about the broader implications of handing sensitive information to AI agents.

For instance, prosecutors in Ukraine’s western Lviv region have noted that stolen digital credentials can allow attackers to take over active accounts without needing the victim’s password.

Despite these concerns, 1Password’s new tool is designed to provide a secure way for AI agents to access user credentials for completing tasks.

The company’s approach to securing user data while enabling AI functionality sets a new standard for how password managers can integrate with AI technologies.

As the tech industry continues to evolve, such innovations could pave the way for more seamless and secure interactions between users and AI agents.

What this adds

The integration is designed to prevent AI agents from accessing sensitive information, but it remains to be seen how effective these measures will be in the long term.

There are no reports of similar integrations with other AI agents or password managers, making this a unique approach to AI and security.
