Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss the remainder of the 2026 season due to blood clots in his lungs, the team announced Monday. The 28-year-old was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, conditions that require him to be on blood thinners and prevent him from participating in football activities.

The news came just days after the Eagles initially announced Hurts would be sidelined due to a superficial blood clot in his calf. The team's medical staff, which helped 21 of 22 starters be available for the Super Bowl, is now treating Hurts for the more serious condition.

Sources told ESPN that Hurts was hospitalized in London until 4 a.m. on Sunday, before the Eagles played the Jacksonville Jaguars in the international game on Oct. 11. Despite this, Hurts played in the game, throwing for 220 yards and a touchdown, but the Eagles lost to the Jaguars 19-17.

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni emphasized the team's commitment to player health, stating, "We always put the players' health first and foremost in every situation." He also defended the decision to fly Hurts home despite knowing about the blood clot, saying, "We get medical information from our guys, and we always put the players' health first and foremost in every situation."

The Eagles' medical staff, including Hurts' agent, did not provide a timeline for his return to the field. The team's statement read, "The health of our players is always at the forefront of our mind."

Tanner McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, started Sunday in Hurts' absence and completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles' 25-14 loss to the Panthers in Philadelphia.

Dr. Sutton, a medical expert, noted that prolonged immobility or travel, injury, inflammation, or genetic risk factors could increase the likelihood of a superficial blood clot traveling to the lungs. This situation has altered the path of treatment from 'rest and management' to needing to immediately address the clots aggressively.

Hurts, who has led the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances, three NFC East titles, and two Super Bowl appearances, including a 40-22 victory over the Chiefs two years ago, will now miss the rest of the season. His absence leaves the Eagles facing a challenging road ahead, with questions about their future strategy and performance.
