Director Georgia Oakley's new adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility' is now in theaters, featuring Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne Dashwood. The film, which premiered on October 13, 2026, offers a fresh take on the beloved 1811 novel.
Diana Reid, author of 'Seeing Other People,' wrote the screenplay for this adaptation. Reid, who is primarily a novelist, approached the project from a writer's perspective, ensuring that the changes made to the story were done with integrity and not just to differentiate it from the 1995 film adaptation.
In the new version, Reid emphasizes the connection between Elinor and Edward through a shared sense of humor, a departure from the more restrained portrayal in the 1995 film. 'She has this kind of goofiness to her that is really interesting for Elinor because, yes, there’s that restraint, but there’s also there is a humor,' said Reid, highlighting the character's multifaceted nature.
The film's costume designer, Snell, discussed the meticulous process of dressing the characters. 'We lengthened Elinor’s to make it a longer jacket, which is something that was used in the time [period], and then they were made in different fabrics but the same color. They could wear the same outfit, but they were styled differently,' Snell explained, emphasizing the importance of period-appropriate attire.
The casting of Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles as Elinor and Marianne, respectively, has been widely praised. 'When I read Diana [Reid’s] screenplay, I was struck by how brilliantly witty it was and how so much of the love story felt like it was really about the sisters,' said one critic. 'It’s such a celebration of sisterhood and what those two women gift each other.'
The film's release coincides with the autumnal equinox, adding to the sense of perfect timing. 'Well, given that the autumnal equinox falls on Wednesday, that makes Friday’s release of Sense And Sensibility practically perfect timing,' noted one reviewer.
The trailer for the film, which features Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, has been met with excitement. 'An irresistible new take on Jane Austen’s iconic Sense and Sensibility: a charming, witty, and deeply relatable story of love and sisterhood,' said one reviewer, highlighting the film's appeal.
While the 1995 film starred Emma Thompson as Elinor and Kate Winslet as Marianne, the new adaptation offers a fresh perspective on the characters and their relationships. 'This is about pulling down the pedestal of what Period Drama is and seeing ourselves in these characters contextually with clothing,' said Snell, emphasizing the film's modern take on period drama.

What's still developing
- Her mom’s a man-eater in “The Odyssey,” and not in that cute Hall & Oates way.
- The plot and themes of Austen’s debut novel, first published in 1811, are familiar to many.
- And so we get director Georgia Oakley’s lyrical and often amusing “Sense and Sensibility” (Focus).
- In the process of adapting Jane Austen’s 400-plus-page novel into a just-over-two hours film, there were some scenes or characters left on the cutting room floor in order to leave room for the sisters to flourish.
- It could be because the British actor has just flown into town for a couple of days to begin her press tour for a new Sense and Sensibility movie.
- But surprisingly, the casting director allowed her to give it another shot.
- “You could tell how Daisy was Elinor and how Esme was Marianne instantly, even in how I set up the fitting for them. Daisy was very structured, very formulaic, labeled; it was systematic in how we tried on things. And then with Esmé, I bought loads of fun things, boxes of trims and ribbons and flouncy things, a lot of hats, and it was about accessorizing and playing,” Snell said.
- “I think she’s a romantic at heart and is very conscious of what she looks like and what she wears and tries things that don’t necessarily fit some of the societal expectations for an older woman,” Snell said.
- A new Jane Austen adaptation is always cause for excitement, and in a surprise announcement that is taking the internet by storm we now have out first look at an all-new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility anchored by the utterly charming and astonishing Daisy Edgar-Jones, and this is a trailer that will utter sweep you up.
- Both Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles appear to be perfectly casted as Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood, and soon all kinds of swoon worthy romance soon follows with the presence of the dapper Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), and the slightly goofy John Willoughby (Frank Dillane).
- Now, 31 years later, a new movie adaptation, starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esmé Creed-Miles, Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Herbert Nordrum, and Fiona Shaw has arrived in theaters in appropriately high style.
