Former Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning in Michigan to support Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, aiming to rally voters in a critical swing state. Harris will join El-Sayed in Detroit for an event aimed at building support among Black voters, according to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle. The stops with Harris come as El-Sayed is trying to win over voters in the Democratic stronghold.

El-Sayed's progressive platform contrasts with Harris' past moderate positions. He is running to the left of the Democratic Party establishment, advocating for universal healthcare and opposing U.S. arms sales to Israel. This stance has caused some Democratic Jewish voters to support his opponent, Mike Rogers, a Republican candidate.

El-Sayed is facing an uphill battle in the November election. Although he won the Democratic nomination, a majority of the city’s primary voters rejected him in favor of Rogers. The most recent survey, conducted by Rasmussen Reports from October 12-14 among 798 likely Michigan voters, found El-Sayed leading Rogers 46 percent to 44 percent.

Rogers has been campaigning in Detroit, a predominantly Black city where his campaign is optimistic he can pick up support from voters hesitant to support El-Sayed. During a rally in Monroe, Rogers criticized El-Sayed's past critical comments about America's history, saying, “It's clear – Abdul doesn't love this community, Democrat or Republican.”

El-Sayed is facing off against Republican Mike Rogers in the November 3 election for the seat being vacated by Senator Gary Peters. The winner of Michigan’s Senate race could help shape health care, climate, and campaign finance policy in Washington, D.C.

Some Democratic Jewish voters are supporting Rogers because of El-Sayed's stance on U.S. arms sales to Israel. New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has been stumping for El-Sayed on the campaign trail, called questions about him having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood 'racist.'

The heated debate between El-Sayed and Rogers came as Americans prepare to head to the polls for the midterm elections in November. El-Sayed's sister-in-law's reported federal terror watchlist history has also been a point of contention, with Rogers blaming him for her situation.

If Democrats hold Michigan's seat, they'd still need to win four more currently held by the GOP to control the 100-member Senate. The outcome of this race could have significant implications for the balance of power in the Senate.

What this adds

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reports that El-Sayed's campaign is optimistic about picking up support in Detroit, while Rogers' campaign is optimistic about support from voters hesitant to support El-Sayed.
