OpenAI Employee Arrested for Secretly Planting Recording Device
· Confirmed
In Short: An ex-OpenAI engineer was arrested for allegedly planting a recording device in an executive conference room.

According to Al Jazeera (Qatar), Alfozan allegedly created customized, encrypted recording devices to secretly record highly sensitive meetings involving senior OpenAI personnel, high-level business counterparts, and government officials. The device was reportedly plugged into the back of a television in the executive conference room.
Aol (United Kingdom) reported that the recording device was concealed within toilet paper and plugged into a TV in the executive conference room on September 28. However, Al Jazeera (Qatar) stated that the device was found plugged into a TV’s USB port in the executive meeting room.
Alfozan’s lawyer, William Pernik, previously asked for Alfozan to be released from custody, subject to conditions including location monitoring and surrendering his passport. Pernik argued that Alfozan had spent the last 15 years in the US and had applied to become a citizen.
Federal prosecutors allege that Alfozan was in frequent communication with an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family and that a Saudi military official paid for a one-way plane ticket for Alfozan’s wife and young son to return to Saudi Arabia after his arrest.
According to Al Jazeera (Qatar), Alfozan replied, “100,” in messages cited by prosecutors, suggesting he may have been in contact with significant individuals in Saudi Arabia.
OpenAI confirmed that the FBI arrested one of its engineers after staff discovered a hidden recording device in an executive conference room. The company referred the matter to the FBI on September 30.
The recording device was allegedly used to capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology, according to Kash Patel, Director of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Alfozan reportedly used a chatbot account associated with his spouse to ask technical questions about setting up a covert audio recording device, according to prosecutors and the court filing.
While the exact details of how the device was concealed and discovered differ between reports, both Al Jazeera (Qatar) and Aol (United Kingdom) agree that Alfozan was arrested for planting a recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI’s San Francisco office.

In the months leading up to Apple's iPhone Duo unveiling, Gurman reported that employees within Apple had begun referring to the device as the "iPhone Ultra," possibly having been influenced by media coverage of the device and leaker speculation. In the end, however, Apple chose to go with a three-letter "Duo" suffix, which Gurman says matches Air and Pro, and leaves room for additional suffixes that wouldn't have worked with "Ultra."
