At the 20th World Congress on Menopause, OB-GYNs presented new data on the treatment of menopause symptoms using fezolinetant (Veoza; Astellas). The phase 4 OPTION-VMS real-world study showed statistically significant improvements in bothersome vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and sleep outcomes as early as week 4.

Marla Shapiro, C.M., of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, Canada, and lead author of the OPTION-VMS oral presentation, noted, "Hot flushes and night sweats can have a far-reaching impact on women's daily lives, including their sleep, quality of life, and overall well-being."

According to Astellas, sleep disturbances are among the most commonly reported and bothersome menopause symptoms, affecting an estimated 40% to 60% of menopausal women.

"We could see that there were improvements in all of this at week 4, which was the first time point assessed, and it reassures me when I see objective findings that are consistent with improvements in the patient-reported outcome," Shapiro told Contemporary OB/GYN in a recent interview.

Catherine Cansino, MD, MPH, an obstetrician/gynecologist and co-author of the new guidance, said, "What's changing is the breadth of options that we now have... And the benefit of that is that we are better equipped to be able to take an individualized approach for patients."

Robert Kauffman, MD, MSCP, a co-author of the guidelines, added, "Hormone therapy is probably the best option for symptomatic, newly menopausal women within 10 years of the final menstrual period or before the age of 60."

A study of 50,000 postmenopausal women found that those who ate more fruits and vegetables had a lower chance of experiencing insomnia, while consuming sugars and carbohydrates increased the risk.

"If you are going through menopause or are in menopause, and lack of sleep or poor sleep quality is affecting you during the day, talk to your provider," said Kris E. from Norton Healthcare.

In a 2024 review in Menopause, it was found that anywhere from 40 to 69 percent of people going through menopause experience sleep disturbances, which can begin as early as when they enter perimenopause.

"Hormone therapy is probably the best option for symptomatic, newly menopausal women within 10 years of the final menstrual period or before the age of 60," said Robert Kauffman, MD, MSCP, a co-author of the guidelines, during a press briefing on Thursday.
