· Confirmed
In Short: The Surface Laptop Ultra’s debut marks a significant step in Microsoft’s strategy to compete with Apple in the high-end laptop market, leveraging Nvidia’s RTX Spark platform to offer a powerful AI workstation.

Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a high-performance notebook designed for developers and creators, at its Windows and Surface event on Oct. 7, 2026. The laptop is powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark platform and starts at $2,599.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is equipped with an Nvidia RTX Spark GPU, up to 128GB of memory, and support for running large AI models locally. Ars Technica reported that the laptop has been summarizing books and movies, generating images from imagination, and running a 70-billion-parameter AI model.
According to Ars Technica, the Surface Laptop Ultra uses an RTX Spark N1X featuring a CPU with up to 20 cores and a Blackwell RTX GPU with up to 6,144 GPU cores, as well as up to 128GB of unified memory.
The entry-level Surface Laptop Ultra costs $2,599.99 and includes an 18-core CPU, a 5,120-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, and a 512GB SSD, according to Microsoft’s configuration page.
The laptop features a 15-inch 4K touchscreen with Dolby Vision IQ support and refresh rates up to 120Hz. It also boasts a peak HDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits, surpassing the MacBook Pro's 1,600 nits.

What's still developing
- With Microsoft decidedly setting its sights on the MacBook Pro, we are comparing the spec sheets of the base $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra against a similarly-priced M5 Pro version of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
- There's also a published brightness level of up to 1,600 nits for HDR content, but Microsoft's goes up to 2,000 nits.
- The question when reviewing the Surface Laptop Ultra isn’t whether it can achieve the things that it claims competently, but whether there’s finally a compelling reason for power users to switch to an ARM system, and whether their daily workloads can still be achieved without hiccups when compared to a more traditional x86 offering, or the biggest competitor within the segment, the MacBook Pro.
- The Surface Laptop Ultra arrives at a strange time in personal computing.
- Ever since it was announced, it's been one of my anticipated laptops of the year.
- At the time, it was the company's answer to the MacBook Pro: a laptop-tablet hybrid oriented toward the growing class of content creators and media professionals.
- It has the "brightest, sharpest, and most vivid display" Microsoft has used in a Surface device, with peak HDR brightness that's 25% higher than the M5 MacBook Pro's.
- But in this case, Microsoft is getting closer to an actual laptop that doesn’t skimp on any one thing.
- Something to look forward to: Microsoft has just revealed the starting price and release date for its new ultra-tier Surface laptop, along with other notebooks powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark SoC.
- The top-end RTX Spark chip pairs a 20-core CPU with an integrated GPU of 6,144 CUDA cores, which Nvidia claims performs like the laptop version of the RTX 5070.
