Hulu Orders Ryan Coogler's 'The X-Files' Reboot to Series
Confirmed
In Short: Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler's reboot of 'The X-Files' to series, starring Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler.
Ryan Coogler's long-gestating reboot of 'The X-Files' has been ordered to series by Hulu, with Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler starring in the lead roles.
The series, which premiered on Fox in 1993 and ran for nine seasons, will be a reimagining of the classic, following two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
Coogler, who wrote, directed, and executive-produced the pilot, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, 'I’ve loved 'The X-Files' for a long time, so getting the chance to write and direct the pilot has meant a great deal to me.'
The reboot, which has wrapped shooting, will be executive-produced by Coogler and Jennifer Yale, who will serve as showrunner.
Coogler's longtime collaborator, Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, wrote the score for the pilot episode.
Original series star Gillian Anderson has expressed interest in returning, though nothing is yet confirmed.
Coogler's approach to the reboot has been praised by Anderson, who noted that his directorial work was an interesting way to bring the franchise back.
The series will be a continuation of the storyline that ended with Season 11 in 2018, with Carter noting a desire to continue the original series' narrative.
Coogler's involvement marks a significant step for the franchise, following his historic Oscar run with 'Sinners,' which set an all-time record with 16 nominations.
The announcement comes after months of anticipation, with the pilot episode being picked up by Hulu in February.
While the original series starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the new series will feature a different cast of characters.
Coogler's Proximity Media label is behind the project, with the series set to explore unexplained phenomena through the eyes of two FBI agents.
