In Short: Russian missiles struck Kyiv, killing two people and injuring 21, according to the Kyiv Post and BBC.

Russian missiles struck Kyiv on Tuesday, killing two people and injuring 21, according to the Kyiv Post and BBC (United Kingdom). The attack targeted the Darnytska CHP-4 power plant and a residential building, leaving more than 1,000 residential buildings without heating and hot water, along with 47 schools, 72 kindergartens, and 18 medical institutions, as reported by the BBC.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the death toll and injuries, stating that the strike occurred late on Tuesday. The BBC reported that President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack came with “no early warning from our partners.”

Zelensky condemned the strike, saying on social media that Ukraine supported an energy ceasefire, but Russia was targeting yet another power plant and the lives of Ukrainian people. He vowed that the attack “will not go unanswered,” according to the Kyiv Post.

The BBC reported that Zelensky had previously proposed a 60-day ceasefire to allow Ukraine to hold presidential elections, following comments from former U.S. President Donald Trump that “it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president.” However, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov dismissed the idea, stating that Ukraine doesn’t deserve a “respite” under any ceasefire.

Lavrov added that under any ceasefire, Europe would be able to “pump [Ukraine] with new weapons” for it to continue the war, according to the BBC.

The BBC also reported that Zelensky said Russia hit many sites the day before, and that several energy facilities in Kyiv had been hit, without giving more detail.

Al Jazeera (Qatar) reported that Russian strikes launched against Ukraine overnight into Saturday included 27 ballistic missiles and only one was intercepted, “simply because there are no interceptors for the Patriot system,” Zelensky said.

Arabnews (Saudi Arabia) reported that Russian and Ukrainian strikes killed at least 16 people over the last 24 hours, with the war still raging in its fifth year.

Both the Kyiv Post and the BBC reported that the attack left more than 1,000 residential buildings without heating and hot water, along with 47 schools, 72 kindergartens, and 18 medical institutions.

The BBC reported that Zelensky said both countries want the war to “come to an end” but “just don’t know how to get there.” He added that Ukraine is working with Russia and the United States to end the war.

The BBC also reported that Zelensky said “We are helping them and we are sharing intel,” referring to efforts to end the conflict.

The BBC reported that Zelensky said it is important that the world does not stay silent about the ongoing war and that the United States should see what is happening and who is responsible for the war continuing.
